Yard Critter - White-eyed Vireo

White-eyed Vireo.

A young one.

White-eyed Vireos have been here in the yard and surrounding woods since early spring, the "Dick Vermeil spits*" call ringing out often throughout the breeding season. So it is no surprise there are young birds in the yard.

We've seen this one, or rather we've seen young birds, about the yard for several weeks now. As I've only ever seen one at a time it is hard to know how many.

The adults were much more secretive, frustratingly so. We saw them once and then it was only by calls that we new they were here.

And as summer ends they will soon be gone, migrating south. Farewell my young feathered friend.

Fare well.

Thanks to Sandra Keller for confirming the ID of this bird; I had originally reported it as a Pine Warbler, but thought Vireo after looking my pictures.

*  Dick Vermeil was the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, and it was our friend Linda Widdop who first likened the call to his spitting habit.
