Yard Critter - Saddleback Caterpillar

It's Caterpillar Week here at Recycled Photons, and Monday's caterpillar is the Saddleback Caterpillar, Acharia stimulea.

Patty found this critter when, while she was weeding in the yard, she brushed against it.

It is venomous. Those bristles not to be trifled with. She texted me that she had been stung and to being the camera, there was a cool caterpillar. I did, along with an icepack for her.

In Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David L. Wagner, the go to caterpillar field guide - highly recommended, he writes, "The sting of the Saddleback Caterpillar may be the most potent of any North American caterpillar." Ouch.

Thanks Patty, my readership appreciates your sacrifice and dedication.
