Yard Critter - Spiny Oakworm Caterpillar

Anisota stigma.

I keep finding cool moth caterpillars in the yard. This one, along with several others, out by our back pond.

This one, not surprisingly, was munching away on a Willow Oak.

Large and with obvious colors, it is surprising that we've not seen it before.

Or maybe not. I've written before about the changes we've made since we moved here. The disuse of lawn chemicals. And the conversion of lawn to habitat. Perhaps all these caterpillars highlighted in what is fast becoming Caterpillar Month are the fruits of those efforts.

It also helps that I've plenty of time to spend in the yard.
