Adjust the brightness and contrast of your monitor so that you can view each of the 17 grayscale steps from black to white. Special attention should be given to the black end of the scale. The darkest step should be made as dark as possible while you are also able to distinguish it from the next lighter step.

Northern Water Snake?
Yes, a Northern Water Snake. Good eyes. :-)
Color is a lot different from what I'm used to seeing. The ones I see in the Pine Barrens are usually black or nearly so.
We get several of these snakes on our yard, and we are just inside the Pinelands boundary. I've seen as many as six at our back pond. If you look at this post, you can see a variety of coloration:
