A Mystery

Look at the suet feeder in this picture, two suet cakes.

That was how it looked on October 7th, when I first filled it.

And this is how it looked on Halloween, twenty-four days later. Still the same two cakes.

And November 4th, one suet cake.

Ok, you're thinking, "Aren't the critters supposed to eat the suet?" Yes, yes they are. So then what's the mystery? This is the mystery: when I retired for the night on the 3rd, there were two suet cakes. And when I looked out the window on the morning of the 4th there was but one.

Suet cakes have been lasting for weeks of late. See images above.

The screen was not pulled off. The lid was still on. There was no 'suet shrapnel' on the ground. The bottom cake did not appear to have been touched.

So what ate an entire suet cake, but only one of them, overnight?

And is it still out there?
