Yard Critter - Wood Frog

While installing the pond in the bench garden I spooked a couple of Wood Frogs.

The first time I saw a Wood Frog I was hiking in Weis Ecology Center*. I wasn't anywhere near a body of water and was surprised to learn that these frogs spend most of their lives in the woods.

The name might have been a clue. Then again, it may have been a reference to the material they were made of.

We've seen these critters in the yard on several occasions. I hope that they enjoy the new pond.

* At the time I visited the Weis Ecology Center was one of the NJ Audubon Centers. Sadly, NJ Audubon decided to close a number of the centers they maintained. A very short sighted decision, poorly implemented (the staff at the Rancocas Nature Center had to travel two hours to the NJ Audubon headquarters to learn that they no longer had jobs; brutally bad management). And which meant that large portions of New Jersey were no longer served by NJ Audubon centers. NJ Audubon claims that everyone in NJ is at most an hour away from a center; but a two hour round trip is much different from a twenty minute trip to a center. And the fewer people that visit centers the fewer people that will care about nature, and will become NJ Audubon Members; a death spiral. Penny wise and dollar foolish.

Fortunately local citizens groups  saved several of the centers, including the Rancocas Nature Center and the Weis Ecology Center, and you can still visit them today. You should go. Really, stop reading and go.

Go already!
