Luna Moths are some of the prettiest moths that visit our yard.
They, like all giant silk moths, have no mouth parts. They are sex machines, with one and only one purpose in life. To mate. That's it.
Once they emerge as moths they have a limited time, approximately two weeks, to get busy. And once the food reserves are used up so are they.
This is one of many dead Luna Moths I've seen about the yard the past few weeks. This individual one morning on the hood of my car. It is sad seeing these creatures battered and worn like this.
But in a way that is a good thing. It means that there were many Luna Moths here, going about the business of being Luna Moths. And hopefully, that means there will be plenty of Luna Moths here next summer.
I look forward to seeing them.
