Yard Critter of the Week - Eastern Eyed Click Beetle

Eastern Eyed Click Beetle

I spotted this one while out taking pictures for this post, specifically the shot showing the cleared area behind the wood pile out to the quonset hut.

I noticed movement and looked down to see this looking back at me while scurrying across the woodpile.

Just look at those "eyes".

Of course, those aren't eyes at all, just spots meant to scare off predators.

And it wasn't one but two beetles, working on the next generation. If I had to guess I'd say the female is the larger of the two, on the right.

This species gets its name from the "eyes" and from the clicking sound it makes when it finds itself on its back and then bends its head down and snaps back to right itself. Popping several inches into the air with an audible "click". I did not try it with these two, not wanting to interrupt.
