Carolina Wrens

I mentioned that we found a Carolin Wren nest in one of our kayaks.

This is the nest. It was a bit jumbled about after we had tried to load the kayak on my car.

Here are the kayaks back on the rack.

A few days later I found the nest empty, sitting on the lower kayak. There was no sign of foul nor fowl play. I wonder what happened?

Dad (?) was still around, singing up a storm. They are surprisingly loud for such small birds.

I hope the little ones fledged successfully.

Last year's brood did not fair well.

One of the eggs from the failed nest.

Look closely, and you'll see an adult bird on two eggs in the nest.

Without the adult it looks like three eggs.

And now, two eggs, one cracked, no adult. The nest had been abandoned.

The wrens had made their nest in a bag of leaves that we had just outside our garage. Not unlike this one.

The leaves were from a friend's yard. We use the them as mulch in the gardens. Of course, once we realized the bag held a nest those were off limits. But I suppose all the activity, including us nosey birders and Max on his leash nearby, made for nervous birds.

So this year they make their nest on the other side of the garage and we still interfere with the nest site.

We need to provide them with a better nesting location for next spring.
