Not long after the Pileated left I was again looking out the window, avoiding working, when I spotted something up in the tree.
Our resident Red-shouldered Hawk. I say resident, but its territory is much larger than our yard. And thus while we see it (or one very much like it) on a regular basis, it is not an everyday visitor.
And it, nor any other hawk, showed up on Census day.
But it did show up today, and sat up there, surveying the yard, for over an hour. It wasn't until I went out to shovel the deck that it flew off.
