Forest Friend

A couple of Christmases ago, if I recall correctly, my friend Terry (popular in the blog these days) gave me a forest friend.

This one:

A Raccoon. Seen here out in Bard's Garden.

Forest Friends, there are several (collect them all!), come hidden in a 'tree stump' which is to be submerged in water. And after a few days, as the Friend soaks up the liquid, it expands and breaks out of the stump.

While cleaning out some stuff last fall I rediscovered this gift, and promptly submerged it.

And now it is the only Raccoon we've seen in the yard this winter. As noted previously on this very blog, we feed the critters peanut butter nightly. And in prior winters we've watched as Opossums, Flying Squirrels, and Raccoons gobble it down. All from the comfort of our living room couch.

But this year, no Raccoons.

Where have they gone? They had been frequenting the Back Bubbler as recently as October.

Very odd that they have disappeared.
