Northern Shrike

A Northern Shrike has decided to spend the winter at Franklin Parker Preserve. The bird was originally seen in December, and has recently been spotted in a different, more easily accessible, section of the Preserve.

And for the past two Sundays it has been spotted by Patty and I, and many others (there was a steady stream of birders coming and going both times).

That white spot in the center of the image is the bird. Bigafying doesn't really help in this case.

I took this shot with a 700 mm focal length lens on a 1.6x crop factor camera.* The bird was distant.

And talk about "distant", this bird, as reflected in the name, breeds in the arctic. But as can be seen from the range map at the linked site, it does wander down to these parts, although it is "scarce" (a technical term).

But this winter, it is "locally common" (another technical term).

And cool to see 'in the neighborhood' as it were.
