Weekday Wanderings ... Dr Still Historic Site

In Medford, the next town east from us, is a small state owned property, one I used to pass twice each working day, one job ago, in the before times.

A nondescript couple of buildings along with a confusing pair of signs.

This one, indicating it was owned by the state of New Jersey.

And this, with no mention of New Jersey.

And as there is some distance between the two it wasn't clear that they were run by the same organization (this is the view from the first sign back back to the second sign, which is not the sign in the center-right of the image; no the second sign is in front of the distant building).

Add that the buildings where in a rather uninviting state of disrepair; Which meant that despite almost daily passes by I had no interest in stopping to visit.

And then my friend Terry got involved. And my interest was piqued.

The son of freed slaves, Dr. Still was self taught and focused his studies on the healing powers of plants.

Some of those herbs are still grown there today.

Dr Still was quite successful. His practice thrived and he became one of the wealthiest men in Burlington County.

The state purchased the property in 2006.

But as can bee seen from this wheel, said property has been languishing for some time.

Just how long does it take for a tree to consume a wheel?

Things are improving though, such as new signage.

The creation and maintenance of trails and grassland areas.

Along with the restoration of Dr. Still's medial office, which he built in 1855. Although funding is still needed to fully realize the potential of the site, as can be seen by the lack of stairs to the front door..

And there are other buildings also need work. Alas, his stately home, built in 1869 and expanded over the years was torn down in 1932.
