Platform Feeder

When we realized we had Flying Squirrels in the yard, we took to the interwebs to learn about them. And we found that we could attract them with peanut butter, best served on a platform feeder.

So I made one and installed it on the tree outside our living room. This post shows it fresh and new.

And this post, not so new.

And a couple of weeks ago it pretty much fell apart.

Shown below is version two.* A bit more robust, albeit not as natural looking.

The critters don't seem to mind. And they can lick without worrying about splinters.

"Awesome!"

That's a pretty brave squirrel.

Finger liken' good.

Such a cutie, with a face only a mother could love.

Oh, more yummy stuff down here!

It works during the day as well.

* This is actually the third one, I built a prototype that was temporarily installed; at most for a week or two.

Superficially similar to the newest version, but not engineered to support the weight of an opossum nor a raccoon.

You can see how the weight of the oppie isn't well supported, with the off center braces. I'd planned only for the flying squirrels. So it was back to the drawing board. Or in this case table saw.
