Bad Bugs

Our NJ Winter Bird Census territory includes more than just our yard, although our yard is the most productive section.

One such section is the place we call Magnolia Marsh. And while we did encounter some birds,  there was nothing we didn't already have.

Well maybe one thing. Although it wasn't a bird.

It was a bug trap.

For a rather nasty bug at that.

I spotted this Southern Pine Beetle trap as we were walking down the road. I was not familiar with this insect. A little research showed it was not one with which I wanted to become acquainted.

It seems this insect sets upon a pine tree and once infected the tree is a goner.

Here's hoping this insect does not become a Yard Critter of the Week.
