Yard Flora

Striped Wintergreen

A pretty little flower.

Also known as "Spotted Wintergreen".

A curious moniker as while the stipe is prominent there are no obvious spots.

"Frequent in dry, upland, oak and pine woods throughout the pine barrens.", Boyd tells us.*

Which makes you wonder what it is doing in our yard.

Maybe one of my plant geek friends can 'splain it to me.

* Wildflowers of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, Howard P. Boyd, a wonderful little guide.
