Yard Critter of the Week - Rotund Disc Snail

The Rotund Disc Snail, Discus rotundatus.

This tiny creature is a non-native mollusk which has become established in a number of states, including New Jersey. A native of western and central Europe, it is not entirely clear how it got here. Likely as a stow away on plant material.

I mentioned it is tiny, this shell is less than half an inch across. If not for the contrast of the snail against the white of the fence post I surely would not have noticed. These snails spend most of their time camouflaged quite nicely in leaf litter. I have no idea what it was doing on the top of this post on our deck, far from any such litter.

But because it was, and I noticed, it is now a Yard Critter of the Week.
