Peckers

Five of them.

And they all visited the yard this past Wednesday.

Hairy Woodpecker, a regular visitor throughout the year. Hairys, like this one, really like to peck away at the triple stump.

Downy Woodpecker, a daily visitor. These two, Hairy and Downy, are very similar, differing mainly in size. The Downy smaller than the feeder it is on, the Hairy larger.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. This is only the third time I've seen one in the yard. Blends in very well doesn't it? Perhaps why we don't see it?

Northern Flicker, a regular if infrequent visitor. There were three in the yard and two in this image, although the second is almost totally obscured by foliage.

And the very poorly named Red-bellied Woodpecker. You can see the "red" belly in this image. Where by 'red' look for 'orange'. I guess the person who named it was color blind.

Only the Pileated Woodpecker, of those we've seen in the yard, was a no show this day. Still any day with five woodpeckers is a good one.
