365 Theme 5: Abandoned

The collapsing and decaying building in these images is the Crab Island Fish Factory. Once upon a time this factory employed over 100 workers and processed millions of fish (200 million menhaden between the peak years 1952 - 1955). Built in 1930, the factory  closed in the early 1970's as the fish stocks became depleted. It is now part of the Great Bay Boulevard Wildlife Management Area and home to birds like the great blue heron seen in the last image.

365 Theme 339: Trio

The same sanderling as in the January 4th Sunday Six photo set in a "Me, Myself, and I" pose.

Sunday Six: January 4th

Barnegat Lighthouse

The light was recently replaced and the re-lighting ceremony was this past Wednesday.

Long-tailed Ducks

Why are they staring at the one in the middle?

Herring Gull

This gull is upset because it failed in its attempt to steal a crab from a common loon. The loon simply dove away from the gull surfacing twenty or so meters away to each its catch in peace.

Harlequin Duck

This female was splashing about at the edge of a small group of a dozen or so ducks.

Harlequin Ducks

The female has a rather drab plumage when compared to the fancily dressed males.

Sanderling

This fellow seemed to be chasing his shadow up and down the waterline.

I spent several hours this past Saturday at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park on the Jersey Shore. It was a bit on the cool side, with 37º F as the high and winds gusting up to 18 MPH. Fortunately it was sunny and didn't feel too cold. And I did dress warmly.

The park is known for its lighthouse and for the birds which over winter there. And the bird most come to see is the fancy plumaged harlequin duck. By February there will hundreds of ducks in the inlet of a variety of species, along with loons (I saw two species on this visit), brant, gulls, shorebirds, cormorants, and even the occasional harbor seal.

... And In With the New, Too.

I mentioned several photo challenges/projects in my previous post. One that I will be participating in is the 365 Photos in 2009 project.  It is similar to the Project 366 challenge for 2008, but for this one I'll be starting at the being of the year, so hopefully I'll post images for more than one third of the themes. Wish me luck!

... And In With the Old ...

Yosemite Valley (April 2003).

Most of the photo challenges I'm aware of are focused (pun!) on getting one to make new images. Challenges like Helen's Sunday Six, Julie's 365 Photos in 2009, and Chad Darnell's 12 of 12 are all about getting you out taking photos.

My In With The Old challenge is different. My goal is to go through the backlog of my images and pick one photo of the week to post here. The rules are simple:

- Once a week post a photo taken prior to 2009.

That's it.

In 2006 I purchased a copy of Peter Krogh's The DAM Book and since then my images are organized, accessible, and backed up. But I've plenty of photos scattered about my hard drives pre-DAM (Digital Asset Management). So my reason for this exercise is twofold. To go back through my images and get them organized. And to see your greatest hits.

I hope you enjoy my oldies. And I look forward to seeing yours. If you decide to play along, leave a link to your blog in the comments below and I'll add your blog to my sidebar.

Have fun.

Out With the Old ...

Well that was fun. I quite enjoyed matching photos to the themes as well as taking photos for the themes. And I am greatly appreciative of the folks who were kind enough to leave comments.

I wish to again thank Helen at Dogeared Photos for assembling the theme list. I hope that she continues to post images in 2009.
