"There's a Baby Deer!"

So last night, around 11:30 or so, Patty notices a car stopped out in front of our house. There was a young woman out looking around. Thinking there might be a problem we headed out to see if we could  help. This, just as a thunderstorm was rumbling through.

(We would lose power, albeit for only a few minutes, but just hours after it was restored after being out a day and a half.)

"Are you alright?", I call out.

"There's a baby deer!", was the response.

And so there was.

A very young deer, trying to hide in the tall grass that the township hasn't mowed in a while.

The deer was fine, if understandably a bit frightened, with four humans towering over it (there was a second young woman in the car). Very young deer 'hide' like this as they're not yet all that good on their feet. One of the woman told us she saw what was presumably the mother deer when they drove up.

I snapped this picture, and we moved away. We assured the two woman that the deer would be fine, and that the mother was no doubt nearby.

In the morning the deer was gone.
