For Small Values of "Giant"

At our recent mothing night this critter made an appearance.

A Giant Water Scavenger Beetle, aka the Giant Black Water Beetle.

And while it is the largest beetle found in the United States, you can see that it is just slightly larger than the stones in our parking area.

Which doesn't quite quality as 'giant' in my book (nor on my blog). But I guess if you are bug person, used to looking at small stuff, this would be  ... yeah, no. It isn't giant. It just isn't.

Nevertheless, it is still a cool critter to have in the yard.
