Yard Bug of the Week

Phantom Crane Fly,  Bittacomorpha clavipes.

Quite striking with its black and white legs.

Their legs are hollow, and widen at the foot end, insect bellbottoms. And this allows them to drift on the breeze, seeming to randomly fly amongst the vegetation, their black and white legs making them difficult to see as they drift between light and shadow. For both predators and photographers. I was lucky to find this one on a window screen one cool morning.
