Yellow-rumped Water Bug

Acilius mediatus, the Yellow-rumped Water Bug*

This critter likes small forest pools with bare bottoms. Which describes where I found it.

In the bottom of a net ... that I was using to clean out the little pond I put in the Bench Garden (you can read about it here and here).

While our yard is not a forest, we do have plenty of trees (and our yard does back up to a State Forest). And that means plenty of leaves fall into and thus must be cleaned out of the ponds each spring.

While keeping a watchful eye for any critters that get scooped out, ensuring they don't wind up in the compost pile or as garden mulch (but rather starring in a blog post).

It always amazes me how these critters find their way to this tiny ponds.

* Not its real name. Just one my friends Sandra and Barb made up. Sadly, this critter has no common name. Feel free to make up one yourself.
