Paper Wasp

Polistes annularis.

A common wasp in this area, which makes the familiar (to me anyway) 'cone' shaped paper nest.

We have these nests on our house, garage, shed, pretty much on any structure in the yard. And plenty of wasps around as well.

This one was on our mailbox.

This on on a cork board in the garage.

As with the Ichneumon Wasp, caterpillars are the primary prey of these wasps. Lots of caterpillars means lots of wasps.
