The darkest step should be made as dark as possible while you are also able to distinguish it from the next lighter step.

What a fabulous color and shape and wonderful DOF
This is beautiful. I love how the flower is the place of rest for my eye after it has traveled across the photo.
And as Ellen says, the colors are gorgeous.
