365 Theme 244: Public Transportation

Of a day gone by.

If you look closely you'll see the railroad ties. Closer still you can see the track. But it has been quite some time since steam engines plied this line. Once upon a time the coming of the railroads to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey was seen as the opening of the area to increased development and industry. Fortunately for us nature lovers it was too little to late. And all that is left are the scattered ruins of a former time.

I prefer the nature too, but the remnants make for a great photo opportunity!

They are everywhere in Rural Australia too! I have a memory of a Yank Comedian telling of driving to Vegas for a show on a regular basis through a town that had no rails, so he fitted a set of speakers to his car and played train whistle and clackety clack sounds, whenever he went through. Apparently the locals used to rip the grass apart looking for the tracks. I was a kid when I saw his show and have never forgot the fun I had for weeks thinking about doing that too. Thanks for bringin back a great memory.

Nature has a way of mending Man's trails upon the earth - although there are still deep ruts where the Conestoga and other type of wagons traveled in areas like on the Oregon Trail. I'm glad to see this one just about all "swallowed up." Nice shot. I like these tree shots - like roads through the trees. Something nostalgic about it. Grand capture. Great colors and composition.

Nice composition. Your narrative brings to mind the bike and walking path that was near our home in Boston - it was part of the Rails to Trails program where the old railroad tracks had been removed and the open space was paved over to create a long recreational space that connected several towns.
